Athletes To Watch At MSTCA Coaches Invitational

Lowell's Chris Polanco, fresh off his mile victory at Yale, is entered in the 1,000m.

Beginning with the Large Schools that are set to begin at 9 a.m., which is a NEW start time,  there are several to keep an eye on.

  • For the girls, the 4x800-meter relay record of 9:30.05 would appear to be in jeopardy. Last week at the Division 1 State Relays, Franklin posted the ninth fastest time in the country with a winning effort of 9:28.17. Lincoln Sudbury is certainly a contender, coming in as the No. 2 seed with a 9:35 best.
  • In the high jump, Wellesley's Julia Jordahl-Henry will be looking to improve on her state best of 5 feet, 6.5 inches. It should be a heated battle with Newton North's LIana Reilly (5-6) and potentially Patricia Douglas of Brookline (5-4).
  • Worcester Tech's Adja Sackor is the clear-cut favorite in the long jump and could threaten the 2012 record of 19-6.5. She enters the meet with a best of 19-2, more than two feet further than the second seed.
  • In the boys' competition, it could be a down-to-the-wire affair in the 600m between Newton North's Theo Burba and Amherst-Pelham's Aiden Poucault-Etheridge. Both have dipped under 1:23 this season with Burba at 1:22.5 and Foucault-Etheridge at 1:22.52.
  • The 1,000m is another event that the outcome could be determined in the final few meters of the race. And it could be between two classmates at Lowell. Senior team members Chris Polanco and Anthony Rodriguez both come in with top seed times of 2:32.0.
  • Marshfield's Derek Holmes has the top seed in the mile with a time of 4:21.50. He'll be matched against Brockton's Christopher McCaffrey, who has a 4:23 best.
  • St. John's Tristan Shelgren, a second-place finisher at the Div. 1 All State X-C Meet, will be eyeing a fast time in the two mile. He clocked an all-time best of 9:10.43 during the outdoor season.
  • There should be some intense competition in a few relays events. In the 4x200m, just .38 separates the top four teams - Brighton, Woburn, Newton North and Taunton. The 4x800m features Marshfield, which is currently No. 3 in the country, with its best of 7:57.54. Close behind is Lincoln-Sudbury (8:04.0) and Amherst-Pelham (8:05.0). The 2015 meet record of 8:04.48, held by Amherst-Pelham could certainly go down.
  • The state's No. 1 high-jumper will be on the infield with St. John's Nikolas Reardon hoping to improve on his 6-7 best, a height that's tied for 15th in the country.
