The New Balance Thomas Cochary Mile was this past Saturday, and Milesplitmass was covering the action. The Cochary Mile is a low key off season race that takes place the day before the prestigious Falmouth Road Race. The runners are treated by the New Balance Athletic shoe company, as they are decked out in New Balance attire from head to toe.
The Girls field offered some pretty impressive talent. Amy Piccolo (Ursuline Academy), Sarah Edwards (Bellingham), Kelly Higgins (Weymouth), Kacie Higgins (Weymouth), Michaela Jones (Phillips Academy), Coralea Geraniotis (Nauset), Callie Schadt (Nauset), Catherine Song (Canton), and Julie Romano of Mansfeld. As predicted the pace was very slow for the first three laps, which played right in the hands of the fastest athletes in the field Amy Piccolo and Sarah Edwards battled it out over the last 200 Meters with Piccolo edging her rival from Bellingham. Piccolo, the Northeastern bound speedster, had a winning time of 5:22.9 as Edwards was clocked at 5:23.6.
The boys mile also included some runners with pretty impressive resumes. Viraj Deokar, the Middlesex School senior, had the fastest mile time in the field with a 4:15 seed time. Northampton star Aiden Gilson, Dan Romano (Mansfield), Zachary Manickas-Hill (Lexington) were just a few of names that made the trip to Falmouth High School. Like the girls race, it was a very slow first half mile and in the end it was Aiden Gilson breaking the tape with a 4:26.1 time. Zachary Manickas Hill was second place in 4:27.3.
