Fields Set for Tommy Cochary High School Mile on August 16

HS, Youth, and Elite Falmouth Miles are Part of New Balance Falmouth Road Race Weekend

FALMOUTH, MA (August 5, 2014)—Twenty high school athletes from throughout Massachusetts will compete in the Tommy Cochary High School Mile on Saturday, August 16, in conjunction with the elite Falmouth Mile later that night and the New Balance Falmouth Road Race the next day, race organizers have announced.

Starting at 5:00 PM at the James Kalperis Track at Falmouth High School, the evening’s festival of miles will kick off with a Youth Mile, followed by the high school mile, a wheelchair mile and the elite Falmouth Mile, featuring many of the top middle-distance athletes in the country. Admission is free.

The high school mile was renamed two years ago in honor Tommy Cochary, a young Falmouth runner who was killed in a drunk-driving accident in 1990. The Falmouth Road Race was a huge part of the family’s life, and athletes are chosen to compete not only because they are among the best prep milers in Massachusetts, but also because they embody Tommy’s spirit of an active life and fun-loving attitude, and because they have shown evidence of making smart choices in their lives.

Winners of both the boys’ and girls’ miles will have a grant of $2500 awarded to their school in their name to be used in a way that implements change in athletics or wellness, such as new equipment, team uniforms, or after-school wellness activities.

Competing in the boys’ Tommy Cochary High School Mile will be Connor Donovan of Easton (Oliver Ames HS); Lucas Estrada of Boxborough (Middlesex HS); Owen Gonser of Wrentham (King Philip Regional HS); Zachary Manickas-Hill of Lexington (Lexington HS); Daniel Moverman of North Easton (Oliver Ames HS); Randy Nong of Lowell (Lowell HS);  Adam Petti of Raynham (West Side HS); Daniel Romano of Mansfield (Mansfield HS); Adam Selsman of Sharon (Sharon HS); and Russell Wells of Wilbraham (Minnechaug Regional HS).

The girls’ Tommy Cochary High School Mile will feature Coralea Geraniotis of Orleans (Nauset HS); Amanda McDonald of Wrentham (King Philip Regional HS); Olivia Manickas-Hill of Lexington (Lexington HS); Amy Piccolo of Walpole (Ursuline HS); Carly Ryter of Sharon (Sharon HS); Colleen Sands of Princeton (Wachusett Regional HS); Juleanna Schultz of Dudley (Shepherd Hill Regional HS); Amy Seaburg of Plainville (King Philip Regional HS); Alison Wyman of West Bridgewater (West Bridgewater

HS); and defending champion Stella Worters of Charlton (Shepherd Hill Regional HS).

Last year, Worters’ high school used its grant to purchase new uniforms and equipment for its girls’ cross-country team.
