Jen Kimball Senior Weymouth High School
"A Jack of all trades and a master of none". We all know the expression about someone who is so well-rounded that he or she can't really excel at any one thing. Weymouth's Jen Kimball, however, is a jack of all trades and a master of many, a rare quality in an athlete that gives her coach options, her teammates comfort, and her opponents fits.
This past week, Kimball's wide array of talents was on display, beginning during a dual meet victory over Braintree where she ran 44.02 in the 300 for the win, threw the shot put 28'8", and then tried her hand at long jump for the first time ever indoors, only to soar 16'4.5", the best mark in the Bay State League and a top-10 mark in the state this year. In fact, Kimball has the #1 or #2 mark in four BSC events in 2013.
Heading South on Saturday, she took the Yale Track Classic by storm, breaking 9.00 for the first time in the 55 meter hurdles trials, only to take 7th in 8.82, another personal best. She followed that up with a 5'1" clearance in the high jump, good enough for 4th. All of this while leaving her best event, the 600 meters, behind until Sunday's Elite meet. The defending Eastern Mass. 400 meter hurdles and South Heptathlon champion, Kimball will turn her focus toward edging the Wildcats as close to a divisional title as she possibly can, then on to the Indoor Pentathlon, where she might be on everyone's radar.
Colin Hoey Senior Lowell High School
Lowell senior Colin Hoey was at his very best on Saturday at the Yale Track Classic, winning the shot put with a heave of 56'.25", his season best and just a shade underneath his indoor personal best. Now the top ranked thrower in Mass., Hoey holds personal bests of 58'10' in the shot put, where he was DI EMass runner-up in 2012, and 134'9" in the discus. The win at Yale makes him a favorite for an indoor state title to add to his already impressive resume.
