Whitman-Hanson girls win second straight EMass Div. 3 Championship

The Whitman-Hanson Regional High girls cross country team might be the one thing in Massachusetts faster than the changes in weather. The Panthers won their second straight Eastern Mass Div. 3 title on Saturday at the Wrentham Developmental Center, led by Gianna Cacciatore, who placed sixth over the 5K course in 19:25.

Cacciatore said that she didn’t like how she started the race, but after a mid-race pep talk from teammate Rachael Baker, the senior rallied to place in the top 10. “As soon as the race started, I felt terrible,” said Cacciatore. “I was 10 places back of where I was supposed to be, but we came through in the end. I saw Rachel pass me. She’s always right there right behind me sticking on me, so when she ran up ahead of me and was like, ‘Come on,’ I knew that I needed to move up.”

A pack of five Panthers placed in the top 14, all finishing within 13 seconds of each other with Cacciatore followed by Rachel Baker (eighth, 19:31), Caroline Mulrey (10th, 19:34), Abby Baker (13th, 19:36) and Kelsey Tierney (14th, 19:38).
