Junior Pat Coppinger finished seventh in a field of more than 150 runners as the Lowell High boys cross country team placed third in the Championship Division of the annual Ocean State Invitational yesterday in Warwick, R.I.

LHS won the JV Division title by 19 points and sophomore Randy Nong topped more than 200 harriers to finish first over the 5K course.

Coach Phil Maia’s crew scored 98 points in the Championship Division to trail only Bishop Feehan of Massachusetts (93) and St. John’s of Shrewsbury (95).

Coppinger flashed across in 16 minutes, 29 seconds to pace the locals, whose other scorers were senior Alex Andujar (15th, 16:52), senior Nathan McCarthy (17th, 16:52), senior Ricardo Torres (38th, 17:22) and junior Mike Kalenoski (44th, 17:36). Also competing were sophomore Nick McArdle (62nd) and senior Robert Patrylo (64th).

In the Boys JV Division, Lowell totaled 54 points to best 35 teams. Chelmsford was second at 129.

Nong covered the 5K trail in 17:54 to trample the pack of more than 200 runners, while sophomore Andrew Whitney was third in 17:59. Others were senior Ian Harvey (10th, 18:28), junior Jimmy Rocha (18th, 18:36), sophomore Thomas Skinner (22nd, 18:44), sophomore Logan Nadeau (23rd, 18:45) and sophomore Tyler Richard (20:46).

On the girls side, Lowell was sixth out of 25 teams in the Varsity 2 Large School Division with 176 points. LHS trailed Lincoln-Sudbury, Chelmsford, Norwich (Conn.) Free Academy, Brewster Academy and Acton-Boxboro.

Scorers were Erin Donovan (7th, 20:14), Bryanna Allison (11th, 20:31), Grace Ndungu (21st, 20:50), Jessica Graham (70th, 22:25) and Sydney Vaughn (87th, 22:53). Also competing were Ileana Medina (23:39) and Eleanor Calley (24:19).

Chelmsford

The girls were second in the Varsity 2 Large School Division with 142 points to trail only Lincoln-Sudbury at 94.

Scoring were Alli Wood in 17th (20:50), Elissa Ladwig (22nd, 20:53), Jennie Pisarik (25th, 20:59), Casey Taylor (35th, 21:14) and Kathryn Cooney (43rd, 21:14). Also running were Kristen Young (52nd, 22:03) and Ally Turner (54th, 22:07).

In the Girls JV Division, Chelmsford was third thanks to Kate Burgess (8th, 22:39), Danielle Lapierre (14th, 23:24), Kelsey Sheehan (15th, 23:24), Emily Louis (16th, 23:24) and Kaleigh Yuan (41st, 24:09).

Kinsey McNamara medaled in the Freshman Division after placing 19th in 18:24 at a 4K distance.

The CHS boys were 6th in Division 2 Large School, the JVs placed 2nd and the Freshmen took 5th.

Senior Rob Massey led the Varsity group with a 6th-place finish in 16:58, sophomore Mike Higson was 34th (17:42), junior Dan Nolan 64th (8:05), junior Nick Arena 73rd (18:13) and junior Todd Wilson 77th (18:18).

Tim Shea placed 14th for the JVs in 18:30, followed by Will Cassels (16th, 18:34), Matt Brown (26th, 18:37) and Tim Cassels (34th, 18:56). For the Freshmen in their 4K, Quinn Cooney finished 3rd in 14:00 and other scorers included Kevin Murphy (18th, 15:00), Jack Newcomb (31st, 15:26) and Ryan Fahey (33rd, 15:30).

Dracut

In the girls race, freshman Katie Colfer covered the 4K course in 18:12 to place 22nd.

Tyngsboro

Kerri Keohane finished second in the Division 1 Small School girls freshman 2.4 mile race in 16:13.

In the boys freshman race, Aaron Thompson was 19th in 14:58, while Jacob Sword was 23rd in 15:05.

Tewksbury

Brian Amaral finished 17th in the varsity Division 1 race in 17:23.

Corey Thomas was 34th at 18:02, while Kip Horahan was 47th in 18:18. THS took finished fourth in the 42-team field with 222 points.

The girls got a strong effort from Christina Dick, who finished 52nd in 22:35. The team finished 20th in the 34-team field with 497 points.

37th Manchester (N.H.) Invitational

The North Middlesex boys finished 14th out of 31 varsity teams. Top finishers in the 5K race were Mike Skelly (13th, 17:00), Jarret Ross (24th, 17:19) and Nick Barry (69th, 18:02).

In the boys freshman race, Chris Skelly placed second out of 235 miles in a 2-mile event in 11:48.

In the girls varsity race, Chapel Guarnieri was 38th in 21:02. Lauren Conner took 76th in 22:11.

Alexa Poulin of Tewksbury and Courtney Walsh scored a goal each as the undefeated reigning state Division 1 champion Raiders rolled.

BOYS SOCCER

Brandon Fahlberg, Ryan Fitzgerald and Mauricio Escobar scored goals to power the visiting Red Raiders.

Assists were dished out by Eusebio Marote, Olf Mouyaka and Guilherme Rodrigues. Defensively, Sean Ahearn and Sean Callahan were superb in front of Sam Lopes (2 saves), who played the first 73 minutes for Lowell (5-0-2).

Westford Academy’s Kurt Naugler scored 2 goals in the first half of this non-league game.

Ben Osgood, Scott McCord and Doug Searl scored 1 goal each. Torston Nielsson added 2 assists, while Kyle Russo had 1 assist. Joe Brunelle made 9 saves while recording his third shutout.

Anthony Zheng, Nick Mariano and Kyle Ryan played well for Westford (3-1).

Senior midfielder Kelly Michal scored off a corner at the final buzzer to give CCHS, which trailed 2-1 at the half, the come-from-behind non-league road victory in Peabody.

Michal also assisted on the other goal, by junior forward Emma Moore, and senior forward Abbie King of Chelmsford added an assist. Nicole DiFilippo finished with 11 saves and sophomore defensive back Molly Bryant stopped 2 shots headed for the net for Central (5-0-1).

Guertin (17-1) placed second and suffered its first New Hampshire Division 1 loss Friday as Keene (13-2) swept. Alvirne is now 9-15.

Top scorers for BG were Caleb Mitchell with a 39, AJ Correia 39, Ben Robinson 41 and Austin Brady 42. Leading Alvirne were Brendan Donovan 42 and Grant Nuttall 45.

Sophomore Jimmy Walmsley shot a 1-over 36 to lead NMRS and he birdied the par-5 seventh hole.

Also starring were Andrew Wass (39), Ethan Ward (44), A.J. Koble (44) and Will Foster (45) for the Patriots (6-3).
