Cross Country Q&A - Catarina Rocha

Peabody's Catarina Rocha was one of the surprises during last year's cross country season. In only her first year running, Rocha finished second to Andrea Keklak at the state meet and advance all the way to Foot Locker Nationals where she finished 31st. MileSplit's Todd Grasley talked to the now junior about how she got into the sport, her summer conditioning, and goals for the season.

How did you get started in the sport?

Last year was my first season of cross country. My first race was the Clipper Relays. It was a really fun meet. It was one of my favorites because it was my first race and I didn't know what to expect. but as soon as the race started my nerves went away and I just ran the best I could.

What did your summer training consist of?

I run about 35-40 miles a week. My workouts consist of tempo runs, cruise interval, and hill workouts. I like the circuit drills with repeat 1000's the best.  My favorite trail to run is our school course because most of it is in the woods and has good hills to train on.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a runner?

My strength is more my endurance than speed I think because I played soccer my whole life up until last year and I think it helped with that.  Also, I am a hard worker and mentally tough. My Weakness is my lack of experience.

Last year you placed second at states in cross and had an impressive year on the track as well. How would you describe your sophomore season?

I felt my sophomore year exceeded my expectations. The high point of the year was probably qualifying for all the big meets such as States, All-States , and Foot Locker Nationals. I didn't think I would make it to those meets because it was my first year. I was very grateful to go to these awesome meets.  I am thrilled with what I accomplished and had a great learning experience. That success also motivates me for my junior and senior year because I want to try again to qualify for those meets.

Your biggest competition last cross country season was Andrea Keklak who is now at Princeton. What will it take for you to bring home the title?

I feel there are many great runners who will be working hard to be the best in the state. I respect the competition and know I will have to prepare myself well  in order to compete with them.

You also got 8th at Foot Locker Northeast and were the youngest qualifier from that region.  You went onto Foot Locker Nationals and placed 31st. What was that experience like for you?

I felt very fortunate to qualify as a sophomore. It was an honor to compete among such an elite group of runners. It was a bit overwhelming  to be there, but the veteran runners were extremely supportive. The entire experience made me realize how much sacrifice and commitment is required to be among the top runners in the nation.

What are your hobbies outside of running?

I enjoy playing other sports like soccer and spending time with my friends.

What is the one object you couldn't live without?

Either my cell phone or sneakers, I couldn't choose! Both keep me connected with others.

What are your goals for the season?

My goals for the season are to improve on last year's performance, qualify for states as a team, and become a better runner.

What is your favorite thing about the sport?

One of the things I like most about running is that your performances are directly related to how hard you work. Running is truly objective.
