Massachusetts distance running has never had a shortage of talent, and the 2025 outdoor season was no different.
From championship miles to national-level two-miles, this group made their presence felt at every level of competition.
Here's a look at ten who stood out among the contenders!
Top Returning Sprinters & Hurdlers:
Hennessy's 2:07.18 in the 800m and 4:34.69 in the mile make her the most complete returning distance runner among girls in the state. With her mile time putting her on the national stage, she begins her final outdoor campaign before taking her talents across the country to the University of Washington.
Bianchi's 4:11.88 in the mile leads all returning boys in the state, and his 9:16.10 in the two-mile shows the range is there at the longer distance as well.
The two-mile belongs to Hammer among all returning girls in the state, where her 10:28.51 sets the standard, and suggests her solid 4:55.68 mile PR shouldn't last much longer.
Theodore Butty (Brookline, 2026):
Butty ran 9:05.17 in the two-mile, the fastest mark among all returning boys in the state, and backed it with a 4:19.05 in the mile.
Conrad's 10:38.62 in the two-mile and 4:59.64 in the mile make her the top returning sophomore distance runner among girls in the state. With two more years of scholastic competition ahead, both marks already hold up at the state championship level.
Gartner posted a 4:12.92 in the mile and 9:23.32 in the two-mile, putting him among the fastest returning boys in the state across both events.
Among returning sophomores, Whorton's 2:10.16 in the 800m and 4:53.91 in the mile give her the strongest two-event distance profile in the state, especially considering both marks came in championship level races.
Pacheco has run 4:16.89 in the mile and 9:09.11 in the 3200m, making him an athlete to watch in the longer distances in his senior campaign.
Donahue's 5:02.85 in the mile and 10:56.59 in the two-mile rank among the strongest marks posted by any returning sophomore girl in the state.
McGrath ran 9:09.60 in the two-mile, the second-fastest mark among all returning boys in the state, and backed it with a 4:22.17 in the mile.
