CIAC Announces Fall Sport Conditioning Can Resume Today

The CIAC announced their first step back to resuming high school sports in Connecticut last night.  Fall sport conditioning was put on pause on July 6th and will be allowed to resume today with non-contact sport-specific skill work beginning on Saturday.

Sports will be able to practice in specific cohorts of 10 as conditioning and skill work picks back up.

School districts still have a final say in whether their member schools will be allowed to resume sports under these guidelines or if they'll hold off longer.

The CIAC XC Committee released their guide on how to resume cross country last week specific to the sport.

In other states, we've seen fall sports pushed back into the winter or spring season.  The CIAC stated in today's press release that if a sport is canceled it will not be pushed back to another season later this school year.

As of now, the competition date is scheduled to begin on September 24th, but the CIAC and Department of Public Health will continue to monitor and update us on the safest way to resume sports as we once knew them.

Today's press release from the CIAC is below.

CHESHIRE, Conn - In alignment with positive discussions with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the CIAC Board of Control voted at its Sunday meeting to restart conditioning for all fall sports.

On Monday, August 24, schools may return to the conditioning activities that were being conducted since July 6.  On Saturday, August 29, schools may begin non-contact sport-specific skill work. Both conditioning and skill work are to take part in small cohorts in adherence with guidance from the National Federation of State High School Associations and the DPH. Conducting conditioning and sport-specific skill work as non-contact and in small cohorts is classified as low risk regardless of the sport.

The Board of Control has determined that any fall sport that is canceled will not be played at a later time during the 2020-2021 school year.

The CIAC will work this week to finalize the timeline of full team activities and contest play. As it has done through this entire process, the board will continue to monitor the situation and the plan will remain fluid.
