State Record Snapshot - Alyssa Sandy Blitzes 100m Hurdles

While there might not be much track going on in New York State, there is plenty of history to pore through. In our time off, we are looking to revisit all of the State Records for the Outdoor Season. Who these athletes were, where their marks came from, and where are they now. We're releasing "Snapshots Of A State Record," where you can learn what it takes, to put your mark on history. Tune in!

We are now into the abridged version of the Snapshots as we get to more recent records. We look here at a record from back in 2016. Enjoy!

Getting right to the question of how Paul Robeson's Alyssa Sandy could have run even faster in the 2016 PSAL Championships prelims than her state record 13.45 in the finals, the answer is of course the wind gauge which evilly reported a 2.1 meters per second, 0.1 over the limit. But when she lined up in the finals at Icahn Stadium it was not exactly a sure thing that she would win the race in a very talented field despite that dominating 13.38 prelims time. Next to her was Clara Barton's Paula Salmon who the year before as a sophomore had won the States and USATF Youth Nationals championships and had been Sandy's shadow during the season at meets like Loucks. And though Queens HS of Teaching sophomore Sophia Myers was not yet in the form that would earn her four States hurdles titles in the next two years, you never know what crazy things the young and fearless will do (such as two 3rd places in States hurdle events as a freshman in 2015). But on May 29, 2016, it was all Sandy as she blasted away to win by more than a half second over Salmon at 13.45. Sandy also captured the 400H at the PSAL in a PR 59.14 (8th best ever in NY), and then went on to complete a sweep of the three States crowns for 2015 by following up her indoor 55H title with wins at Cicero-North Syracuse as she took the 100H in 13.78 and 400H in 1:01.11. The images for this article are from the PSAL, but the videos are all from the CNS States meet two weeks later.

Sandy broke the 100H record of 13.49 set by Ronetta Alexander of Williamsville South who won the US Juniors championship on August 3, 2003 in Miami. The following year after her first season as a USC Gamecock, Alexander won the World Juniors title with a 13.28 time.
