New Balance Nationals Indoor Girls' Preview: Individual Championship Running Events

SPRINT EVENTS

60m

(Trials, Saturday at 9 a.m.; Semifinals, Sunday at 11:20 a.m.; Finals, Sunday at 1:57 p.m.)

Kyla Hill of Springfield Central and Wachusett's Victori Steffon are schedule to compete in this event. Hill has had a spectacular season this winter where she was undefeated in the 55-meter dash and had impressive victories at the All State Meet and recent New England Championship where she clocked identical PRs of 7.14. Steffon was a runner-up to Hill at states and has a best of 7.17 for the short sprint.

200m

(Trials, Saturday at 5:35 p.m.; Finals, Sunday at 2:59 p.m.)

Bromfield School's Chloe Alfieri and Oakmont Regionals's Alyssa Madden will answer the gun in this race. Alfieri, who dominated the 300m this winter, has potential to break her current best for 200m of 25.03, a time she ran to place fourth at the New England's last June. Alfieri appears to have the momentum for a sub 25-second clocking at the Armory. She ran one of the top five times all-time in the state for the 300m when she set a meet record of 38.95 at the Division 5 Championships. She also took individual honors at the All State Meet and the New England Championship this past Saturday where she broke the tape in 39.12. To have any chance at making it to the finals, a time in the 23- to low 24-second range would probably earn a berth. That would seem out of reach for Alfieri, but a new PR would seem likely with the way she has been performing lately. Madden was the state and New England champion last year. She ran to a season best of 39.74 for 300m at the Division 5 Championship and clocked a PR of 25.39 for 200m in 2017 at NBNI meet.

400m

(Trials, Saturday at 3:35 p.m.; Finals, Sunday at 2:13 p.m.)

Alfieri is the lone MA entry in this race. She's a sub 60-second 400m runner with a best of 59.63. Judging by her season this year for 300m, she has potential to improve on that time substantially this week, somewhere in the range of 56 seconds.
