Sub-5 For Jenks At Last Chance To Qualify Meet!

Lucy Jenks became the latest member of the sub five-minute club.

The Newton South sophomore blazed to a nearly five-second best in the mile run at Sunday's Last Chance To Qualify Meet with a winning time of 4 minutes, 57.94 seconds. Jenks' performance ranks her No. 2 in the state, just .07 of a second behind Natick's Grace Connolly. It also ranks her No. 15 on the national list. Jenks defeated fellow teammate Caroline Barry, who was timed in an impressive 5:06.68 clocking.

It was two teammates battling it out in the boys' mile, too. Marshfield's Mike Maglio edged classmate James Condon with a winning time of 4:29.78. Condon finished at 4:30.72. Placing third overall was Lunenburg's Chris McCauliff at 4:30.81.

In the too-close-for-comfort department, Lowell's Kimesha Lewis out-leaned her rivals to capture the 55-meter dash. Lewis crossed the line in 7.40. Sharon's Veronica Wallace (second) and Ursuline Academy's Ashley Thomas (third) were both timed in 7.41.

Cambridge Rindge & Latin's Jimmy Dorielan won the boys' short sprint in 6.68. Haverhill's Sean Glass was second at 6.73. Clarence Juies of Everett was third with a time of 6.74.
