Shelgren Takes Prize At Foot Locker
We figured that Tristan Shelgren had a chance to win the individual title at Foot Locker, and the St. John's Prep runner did with an impressive time of 15:35 on the challenging 5K terrain at Van Cortlandt. Even though he had the credentials to make it happen this weekend, Shelgren was just looking to crack the top 10 and earn a trip to San Diego for the nationals.
"Going in, (Friday) night, I wasn't trying to win," he admitted. "I was just trying to qualify, to be honest. I was like, 'Just get top 10," and I came down the hill, I heard someone say eighth, so I thought that meant someone was close, and I didn't want to risk it, and said if I try to win it, actually, that's the best way to get in. It happened."
