All State Meet Boys' Preview: Who Are The Top Runners To Watch This Weekend?

Shelgren could be our Division 1 champion this weekend. Of course that's a tall order for the talented senior, who will have to contend with outdoor 5K national champion Ryan Oosting (Arlington) and Andrew Mah (Newton North), who are also capable of breaking the tape this Saturday. Shelgren is coming off a very impressive win at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 1 race where he was clocked in a season best of 15:14. The St. John's harrier is unbeaten this season against his MA rivals and chances are he wants to keep it that way. Our guess is he will not veer away from a strategy that has worked for him all season long. That is to always keep his focus on the top position and wait until the final mile to start working on his competition. His last two races at Wrentham, the Frank Kelley Invitational and the divisional state meet, Shelgren has gone sub five minutes the final mile.
