Shelgren, Connolly Fastest At EMass State Meet

There were few surprises at Saturday's Eastern Massachusetts Division State Championships with most of the expected results happening on a cold and blustery day at the Wrentham Developmental Center.

Tristan Shelgren of St. John's Prep posted the fastest time of the day. In a tight battle with Newton North's Andrew Mah in the Division 1 race, Shelgren pulled away from his rival in the closing stages to win with a season best of 15 minutes, 14.75 seconds. Mah took runner-up honors at 15:21.76. Four more dipped under 16 minutes for the 5K course, inclduing Brookline's Lucas Aramburu (third, 15:47.54), Newton North's Ian Horsbugh (fourth, 15:49.52), Needham's Cameron McLeod (fifth, 15:50.98) and Westford's Jason Dolan (sixth, 15:56.29).

Arlington's Ryan Oosting held back early and then breezed to a winning 15:51.52 effort in the Division 2 race. Wellesley's Tom Weiss (second, 15:56.18) and Concord-Carlisle's Timothy McClure (third, 15:57.62) also cracked 16 minutes.

As expected, Natick's Grace Connolly was a convincing winner in the Division 2 race. In a solo effort from the start, Connolly navigated the course in 17:40.87. Wellesely's Margaret Donahue was a distant second in 18:30.98.
