Mainers Shine at New England championship -Ruginski wins long jump

Bonny Eagle senior Jamie Ruginski captured the 2009 New England long jump title, winning with a best jump of 22-7 3/4. Ruginski entered the meet as the #1 seed with his 22-0 jump from the Class A state meet. Jamie was on top of his game, jumping over 22-0 on most of his jumps. Ruginski win is actually his 2nd new England title, as he won the 300 Hurdles last spring.

Greely Boys 4x800 running in the slower section battled with Cheverus throughout the race went on to win their heat, and finish 4th overall with a 8:06.87. Greely’s four runners were James Lepgae, Andy Fitch, Logan Price, & Mark McCauley. Cheverus just missed out on the podium as they were 9th, in a fine 8:08.47

In the girls 300m, Brunswick’s Kristin Slotnick blazed to a 3th place finish, just missing 2nd by .01 as she tripped across the finish line. Slotnick's time was 40.71.

In the girls high jump, Sophomore Caroline Summa, rebounded from her performance in the Class A state meet to finish 4th, with a 5-5 clearance. Summa had a couple of close attempts at a new pr of 5-7. Maine state champion Colby Gail also notched a spot on the podium tying for 6th with a 5-3 clearance.

The mutli-talented Chesley Tewell competed in the 55 hurdles & 55 dash, qualifying her the finals in both events. In the 55 hurdle final, Tewell ran a personal best 8.48 good for 6th place, she had about 3 minutes rest and was back at it again in the 55 dash, sprinting to a 5th place finish in 7.34

In the girls shot put, Catie Funk of Scarborough matched her #6 seed with her throw of 39-9, just off her personal of 39-10.

Gray New Gloucester scored a 6th place finish in the Boys 4x200, with a fine 1:33.61 clocking behind a strong anchor leg from Ben Mikolvich.

In the girls long jump, Greely's Hillary Cederna had a strong performance, leaping out to 16-10 3/4, god for 5th place.

Other strong performances came from Nate Hathaway of Scarborough in the Mile, just missing out on the podium for the 2nd straight year. Hathaway finished in 7th just a mere .43 seconds out of 6th, Nate did set a personal best with his 4:23.96 run. Rachel Wilkinson of Gorham ran a strong race to finish 9th in the girls mile, Wilkinson ran a pr of 5:10.5. In the Boys 300m, Ben Mikolvich of GNG just missed the podium with his 7th place clocking of 35.81. Maria Curit of Biddeford had a strong showing with her 8th place in the 600m, her time was 1:38.05. Whitney Chamberlain of Scarborough also recorded a top 10 finish in the 1000m with her time of 3:02.03. Daniella Foss, the Class B shot put champ from Waterville was 9th in the shot, 38-4 1/4.
