Manhattan Invite Recap: Lowell and St. John's Dominate

Shelgren Wins the Varsity G Race -->

(St. John's Boys Winning Varsity E Race)

Only going off thirty minutes after the dominant showing by MA#1 Lowell, MA#3 St. John's boys took on the Varsity E race with hopes of also putting on their own special matinee at VCP.

Well after only 1200m in the race, Ben Kovacs was leading and right behind him were three St. John's teammates, with their number five runner not too far off. Entering the back hills, where a race could be won or loss, the St. John's express train added more coal to the fire and began to pick up more speed. Kovacs would cross over the bridge still in the lead with little less than a half mile to go. Meanwhile, a St. John's trio were still all running in the top ten and within sight of their frontrunner. Despite just coming up short of an individual victory on the final homestretch, Ben Kovacs would still dip under 13:00 and take an impressive second in 12:57.4. Even more impressive would be the moves put on by St. John's #2-#4 runners, who held steadfast over the challenging final stretch to take 4th, 6th, and 7th place. It was quite clear that St. John's had taken the team title and once the results were posted, we would see them win with 41 points and a 13:09 team average.

Words from our Winners

"We were confident we were all going to be in the lead pack going into the first mile. Everyone was able to execute the plan and have enough left to finish the race strongly. I went out and controlled the race from the beginning. I used the hills to my advantage and was able to pull away. The last 600 meters was challenging but I was able to close fairly well. Overall, we were happy with our results. Van Cortland Park was a good test of our strength yet we still have work to do." - Ben Kovacs
