Mountaineer Girls Win 5th Straight Title

Another year, another comfortable championship victory for the Wachusett Regional High girls' indoor track team.

The Mountaineers, with 82 team points and 20 more than runner-up Algonquin, captured their fifth straight Central Mass. Division 1 championship, Sunday at Fitchburg High's Grutchfield Field House.

Nashoba Regional was third with 52 points, followed by Shrewsbury at 45.

“Our veterans who led us all season stepped up and got the younger kids ready to compete today,” said Wachusett coach Mike O'Malley, whose team was unbeaten (6-0) in dual meets and won the Mid-Wach A League Meet.

Wachusett senior Amy Collins, who recently accepted an athletic scholarship to Wake Forest University, earned two gold medals. Collins cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump for first place, and also won the 600 in 1:43.03.

Junior Colleen Sands repeated as the 2 mile champion in 11:50, seven seconds ahead of Nashoba junior Kelsey Horowitz.

“I went out hard from the gun,” said Sands, who won the mile two years ago. “My goal was to build a gap and stay comfortable for the rest of the race, and that's pretty much the way it turned out.”
