WRENTHAM — The 0.09 of a second that separated Janelle Solviletti from Sutton’s Jessie Cardin were enough for Arlington Catholic to sweep the first place spots in the Division 2 girls and boys junior-senior cross-country meet at the 37th Annual MSTCA Invitational Saturday at the Wrentham Developmental Center. “It’s awesome. We never guessed that would happen,” Solviletti said. The senior said she took the lead roughly 600 meters into the 3.1 mile course and held through the corner turn before the second mile. As she rounded through the snakelike bends before the final hills, Cardin picked up her pace and began to close the gap. “I just kept pushing, I felt good so I just kept going,” Solviletti said. “The hills were pretty hard . . . towards the end when that girl came up, I tried to kick some energy to do it at the end. She broke the tape at 18:59.3. Cardin finished at 19:00.2.
Coaches Please let's not forget our annual canned food drive. It sure would be wonderful if you could get each one of your athletes to donate just one can. That would bring our total way over 3,000 since some schools are already collecting and want to win the $100 toward a team pizza party. If you asked your captians to ask their teammates to bring in one canned good this week and one next week we sure would see our collect break a new record. The foodkitchens that we send food to are thrilled because its just in time for Thanksgiving and many families can use the help. Please join us in the charitable endeavor!
WRENTHAM – As a rule, Haverhill’s Riley Gilmore has made a career of taking the pace from gun, but when another harrier is willing to push hard early, she’s perfectly content to sit back before making a decisive move. Yesterday’s Div. 1 Junior/Senior race at the State Coaches Cross Country Invitational played right into the junior’s strength. Dracut’s Karina Shepherd put 50 yards on the pack in the first mile into a chilly breeze. Gilmore let the race come back to her.
