On June 28 in the Olympic Trials at Eugene, Ore., Topsfield's Abbey D'Agostino finished fifth overall and just .19 off of the third place cutoff for a spot at the London Olympics. Just a few weeks after winning the NCAA 5K championship, D'Agostino finished with a time of 15:19.98.
The race, broadcast on the NBC Sports Network, showed a tight pack for most of the first half of the race, until 2011 National Champion Molly Huddle pulled away to the front. She would eventually yield the win to Julie Culley at the finish line. D'Agostino paced herself and stayed near the back of the pack until making a big move ahead at the 8:50 mark.
By the 13:00 mark, she was fifth overall and passed the eventual third-place finisher Kim Conley for fourth at 13:50. Conley passed her again, as she made her sprint towards the finish, passing Julia Lucas at the finish line in a photo finish.
