Marathon Sports Presents: Athletes of the Week

Brendan Sullivan, Westford Academy

What else needs to be said, this athlete smashed his own State Record in the pole vault last week at the Weston Twilight Invitational. His vault of 16ft bettered his previous record  of 15'7" achieved last year.  The defending All State Champion broke the 16ft barrier for the first time, and will be chasing the New England record of 16' 9". “I was calm and just tried to have fun with it today,” said Sullivan. “I went back to the basics. I was thinking about it too much. I just wanted to enjoy it.  I’ve had a lot of frustration. I tried not to over think things.” Sullivan's vault has him on top of the New England rankings.  He is also an accomplished hurdler and is currently ranked 9th in the State.  The Senior will be packing his bags to Yale University in the Fall.

Nicole Genard, Somerville High School

Somerville’s Nicole Genard broke the Weston Twilight meet record with a startling heave in the javelin  of 136-4. Genard’s effort was well ahead of runner-up Micaila Olson of Whitman-Hanson (115-4) and Natick’s Elizabeth Bruns (113-2).  Genard was pleased with her effort and is looking to improve on her new personal best. “This is my first big meet I’ve been in (this spring),” she said. “I just got out there and threw. I feel great. This is my senior year and I definitely want to go out with a bang. I’m really trying to get my mark and form down.”  Genard will certainly be a threat in whatever event she competes in. She is an accomplished hurdler (14.6), Long Jumper (18ft), and anchor on one of the best 4x100 Meter Relay Teams in the State. She is currently ranked fourth in the State in the 100 Meter Hurdles, and # 1 in New England in the Javelin.  She will be taking her talents to Northeastern University next fall.
