Terriers Sweep Weekly Cross Country Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass – Boston U. sweeps the performer of the week nods after the final tune-ups before the America East Championship this Saturday at the University at Albany. Chris Mercurio (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) grabs the honor for the men while Marita Stressenger (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) takes home the women’s prize.

Mercurio led a group of six Terriers this weekend at the Mayor’s Cup, a race featuring collegiate and non-collegiate athletes, in Boston. The senior’s time of 26:17 in the 8K was good for 76th overall and ninth among harriers in the college level.

Stressenger led the Terrier women to an eighth place finish by placing 57th overall in the 5K race in 19:31.

All 18 teams head to Albany this weekend for the conference championship race. The women kick off Saturday with a 10:30 start and the men follow at 11:30.

Boston U. was one of only two teams in action this past week sending a small contingent of runners to the Mayor’s Cup in Boston. The Mayor’s Cup features a field comprised of collegiate and non-collegiate athletes with various affiliations. The Terrier men raced six and received a strong performance from Chris Mercurio who finished 76th overall and ninth among runners at the college level in 26:17. For the women, junior Marita Stressenger placed 57th overall finishing in 19:31. Both squads finished eighth as teams and second among Division I schools. The America East Championship on Saturday is next for the Terriers.

Stony Brook joined Boston U. as the only teams to compete this weekend. The Seawolves took part in the Central Connecticut Mini Meet on Friday. The men’s team finished in a tie for third and the women’s team placed fourth. In the final tune-up before Saturday’s conference championship, Tyler Frigge (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) took 13th place for the men, completing the 5K in 15:47. Junior Lorraine McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland/St. Augustine’s College) bolted through the 3K women’s course in 10:44 finishing 12th.
