Stonehill Sweeps Northeast-10 Cross Country Championship Titles

American International's Cherutich and Rop Claim Individual Titles

South Easton, Mass. – The Stonehill College men's and women's cross country teams each claimed championships at the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Cross Country Championships, which were held today at Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts.

American International College student-athletes swept the individual championships as Glarius Rop won the eight-kilometer men's race in a time of 23.59 and Jeptui Cherutich won the five-kilometer women's race in a final time of 17.39. Rop and Cherutich were also named Northeast-10 Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year, which was voted on by the conference's head coaches.

Stonehill's women's team won their third consecutive team title and sixth overall in the past seven years. The Skyhawks men's team finished second a year ago, but took home the team title today as they had four of the top ten finishers, overall. Steve Polito finished second behind Rop to lead the Skyhawks.

On the women's side, four of the top nine finishers represented Stonehill College. Overall, it's the tenth women's championship in program history.

Also, announced at today's championship were the NE-10 Conference Rookies of the Year and Coaches of the Year. Stonehill's Karen Boen was named Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, as she helped lead her team to dual conference championships.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell's Brendan Adams was named men's rookie of the year, while Bentley University's Tara Dooley was named women's rookie of the year. Adams was the top freshman finisher in today's championship race, placing 16th overall, while Dooley finished second, five seconds behind Cherutich.

The Northeast-10 awards it's all All-Conference teams at the conference championship, based on the outcome of today's races. Finishers one through seven are awarded first team honors, eight through fourteen second team, and finishers 15 through 21 were named to the third team.
