An Experience Like No Other

The Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) is always looking for innovative ways to grow the sport.  This time they may have hit the jackpot.  MSTCA officials are launching the inaugural Bob McIntyre Twilight Invitational, scheduled to take place on October 22nd at the Barnstable Fairgrounds in Falmouth.  This unique format is a first of its kind in Massachusetts and the only invitational to be run under the lights in New England.  Other meet directors have used this format - most notably the Woodbridge Invitational in California - and thousands flock to the ultra high energy events.  Racing at night is a unique experience, but racing cross country at night is like nothing else.  The energy of the crowd is palpable, and running a PR seems effortless as you race in and out of the shadows.  Below is a clip from the 2011 Woodbridge Invitational that helps illustrate what a phenomenal experience a race like this can be.

The MSTCA is reporting that 42 teams and over 769 individuals are currently registered for this year’s event, and it’s not too late to join them.  Registration information can be found at www.MSTCA.org or by contacting meet director Jim Hoar (hoarj@dy-regional.k12.ma.us 508-398-7630) or site director Frank Mooney (trackguy60@comcast.net  508-728-9921). The 2011 race is only open to MIAA teams, but the 2012 race will be open to teams outside Massachusetts.
