McKenzie Gary two 4th place finishes (LJ/300M) leads Maine contingent at NE Championships

     Mt. Ararat’s McKenzie Gary continued his impressive indoor track season with 2 podium finishes at the 24th New England Championships.  Gary leapt 22ft on his final attempt in the long jump to move into 4th place, his best before his final jump was 21-8. McKenzie came back in the 300m to clock 35.56 to finish 4th once again. The time is the 2nd fastest in Maine State history just behind Cam Cormier (Bangor, HS) 35.52 back in 2007.

 

Joining Gary on the podium in the long jump was Portland’s Imadhi Zagon, who got out to 21-11 ¾ to nab a 5th place finish. This is the 2nd consecutive podium finish for the Portland senior. 

 

Old Town’s Jake Leithiser (INTERVIEW WITH JAKE) the Class B high jump champion had a strong day as well, finishing in a tie for 3rd, clearing 6-5 which was a new personal best and Maine state leading performance.  Class B shot put champion, Michael Burgess (Greely  INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL) didn’t have his best day throwing (50-8), but it was good enough for a 6th place finish.

Other Maine boys running well where the Scarborough Boys 4x800, which won section 1 of the 4x800 in 8:09.33, which was good for 7th place overall.  Class A mile champion Jack Terwilliger (Cheverus) ran 4:25.69 in the mile good for 8th place.  Bonny Eagle’s Joey Collins ran 1:23.93 for 9th in the 600m, he won section 2; Collins was also part of the state leading 4x200 1:34.93.  Gorham’s Jesse Orach ran a seasonal best 9:54.92 in the 2 mile to win section 1. Also of note freshman Dan Curts (Ellsworth) ripped a huge personal best 9:57.18

          Only one Maine girl stood on the podium tonight as Mt. Ararat senior Randi London placed 5th in the shot put , throwing 38-4 ½.  

Other action on the girls side saw Mt. Ararat hold off Brunswick to win section 2 of the girls 4x200m relay to set a new Maine state leading mark of 1:50.14 to 1:50.18.  Bonny Eagle’s Amber Dostie ran well in the girls 1k clocking 3:03.55 good for 10th overall. Emilia Scheemaker (Scarborough) the Class A state champion just missed making it on the podium jumping 17-1 1/2 to finish, she was 1” away from 6th place.  Gray New Gloucester‘s Class B 55m champion Amanda Peterson narrowly missed the finals, clocking a new personal best of 7.41.

Bonny Eagle's Amber Dostie (#49) was the top Maine runner in the 1k, finishes 2nd in section 1 and 10th overall running 3:03.55
