Mars Bishop of Barrington en route to his win in the mile at last year's meet.
Athletes from throughout New England area as well as New York and New Jersey will join the host state for this Thursday's ninth annual Rhode Island Classic, held at the Providence Career and Technical Academy field house. The meet kicks off with the boys' competition beginning at 9 a.m. The girls will start at 1:30 p.m.
For an early-season meet, the RI Classic has had its share of stellar competition during the last eight years. In 2015, Danae River of Wilbur Cross (CT) established the meet record of the 800-meter run when she clocked a winning time of 2 minutes, 12.09 seconds. Eventual national long jump champion Kate Hall of Lake Region (Maine) set two meet records in 2013 when she won her specialty with a leap of 19 feet, 11 inches and the 55m dash with a time of 7.01, an effort that was No. 1 in the country at the time. Also during the 2013 meet, former La Salle Academy standout and current Stanford freshman DJ Principe won the Freshmen Mile with a MR of 4:34.88.
