In the girls' race, we could see a similar two-person battle with Newton North's Einat Gavish and Newton South's Caroline Barry facing each other. Both go into the race with identical 18:22 best for 5K from the Twilight Invitational. Gavish was second in the Division 1 race at the recent Coaches Invite. There's also Olivia Sheffield of Lowell. Sheffield clocked a PB of 18:48 this past Saturday to win the Merrimack Valley Conference Championships and was eighth overall in the Varsity C race of the Manhattan Invitational last month where she was timed in 15:21.6 for the 2.5-mile distance.
It looks like several schools have potential to contend up front, including Lowell, Newton North, Boston Latin and Newton South.
