What's Up With Grace & Ryan (& Other X-C Stuff)?

Trails Are Terrific For Tristan

We already knew that Tristan Shelgren would be one of our top runners this season. The senior from St. John Prep had an outstanding junior year in track and cross-country in 2016-17, including finishing second behind Peabody's Marcelo Rocha at the Division 1 All State X-C Finals. Shelgren has proven that he stayed consistent with his summer training and is focused on making his final season on the trails a memorable one. In the Championship race of the Ocean State Invite, Shelgren utilized a patient approach and a devastating kick to take home individual honors. The multiple all-stater waited until the final 150 meters to unleash his blazing speed, passing New York's Mason Gatewood of St. Anthony's with less than 50m remaining to win in 15:32, the same time as Gatewood. Just a week later, at this past weekend's Kelley Invitational, Shelgren was paired against another one of our state's elite, Newton North's Andrew Mah. Running shoulder-to-shoulder with Mah for two miles, Shelgren was able to put on a surge shortly after and win convincingly with a personal best of 15:24. Mah crossed the line in second with a respectable 15:46.39 clocking. Shelgren's last 1.1 miles was 5:23. In other words, he did the final third of the race at a low 4:50-mile clip!
