Sarah Edwards is heading to South America
The Bellingham native and Virginia Tech freshman captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Saturday's USATF Junior Track & Field Championships. Leading virtually from the start, Edwards cruised to a time of 10 minutes. 14.63 seconds. Finishing fifth in the race was Newton South's Clare Martin in 10:46.36. Martin, a second-place finisher in her qualifying heat of the 800m on Friday, did not compete in the finals of that event.
Edwards' victory earned the onetime Bellingham High star a trip to the Pan American Junior Championships, to be held July 21-23 in Trujillo, Peru. The top two placements in each event punch their ticket to the Pan Ams.
