Bay Staters Competing At US Juniors

For s few Massachusetts' athletes, the outdoor season isn't over quite yet.

The USA Junior Track & Field Championships, held this weekend in Sacramento, Calif., will feature a few from the Bay State area. 

Recent Newton South graduate Clare Martin is entered in the 800-meter run (Friday, 3:35 p.m.) and the 2K steeplechase (Saturday, 5:49 p.m.). In the 800m, Martin is the No. 6 seed based on her time of 2 minutes, 7.91 seconds from the New England Championships a few weeks ago. Among the field is New York's Samantha Watson, who will be aiming for the American and Junior high school record of 1:59.51  by Mary Cain in 2013.


Martin is the No. 2 seed in the steeplechase with her best of 6:46.63. The race also includes former Bellingham standout Sarah Edwards, a freshman at Virginia Tech, who ran a best of 9:52.89 at the NCAA Division I East Championships.

Lenox Memorial's Shannon Meisberger is entered in the 400m hurdles (Friday, 2:55 p.m.). Meisberger captured the individual title at the MIAA All State Championships where he clocked an all-time best of 1:00.60. She won the New England 300IH crown a few weeks ago. 

Former Lowell all-stater Kaley Richards is scheduled to compete in the 3,000m (Saturday, 8:49 p.m.). Richards, who just completed her freshman year at UMass-Lowell, has a 3K best of 9:58.50, which she did to finish seventh overall at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational this past February.
