Arlington's Oosting Claims National 5,000m Title!

He's a two-time state champion and he's a New England champion.

Now Ryan Oosting is a national champion!

The Arlington sophomore got his weekend to a rousing start at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Championship on  Friday night. Oosting won the 5,000-meter title inside the North Carolina AT&T Irwin Belk Track with a phenomenal time of 14 minutes, 36.13 seconds.  He edged New Balance Indoor titlist Ben Varghese of Tennessee by a mere second. Varghese crossed the line at 14:37.21. A total of eight runners dipped under 15 minutes in the race.

Oosting is not finished yet. On Saturday, he will try and make it twice as nice when he toes the line in the two mile.

Dracut's Erin McMeniman also earned All-American status. McMeniman finished third overall in the javelin with a toss of 147 feet, 3 inches.

In the Emerging Elite Mile, Tewksbury's Rachel Sessa turned in a PR performance by winning the race with a time of 4:51.26, just .20 ahead of runner-up Alexandra Hays of New York. Prior to the nationals, Sessa's best was her 4:53.94 effort from her victory at last year's All State Outdoor Meet.
