It's certainly looking like championship season now.
At the Class Championships this past weekend, a number of athletes proved that they're beginning to round into peak shape with the State Meet less than two weeks away. Take a look below at the highlights that we felt stood out and then VOTE for the one you feel should be No. 1 for the week. Voting ends Saturday at midnight.
With 322 votes, Hendricken's Joseph Rivera Santos' victory in the 110m hurdles at the Brian Moretti Invitational was the top vote-getter in last week's poll.
- Lincoln's Samantha Andrews sweeps the throwing events (shot put, discus, javelin and hammer) at the Class B Meet. In the hammer, she tossed a more than 10-foot PB of f 170-4, second best in the state.
- Central's multiple all-stater Donatien Djero pulled off a rare triple at the Class A Meet by winning the 100m, 200m and 400m runs. If that wasn't enough, he also ran a leg on the Knights' winning 4x100m relay squad.
- Classical's Jacob Furland became the latest hammer thrower to take the No. 1 position in the state at the Class B Meet.
- La Salle Academy's Emily Kane collects 26 points for the Rams by winning the 1,500m and 800m and finishing third in the 3,000m.
- Portsmouth's Nikki Merrill clocking a state best in the mile and also taking the 800m at the Class B Meet.
- Toll Gate's Casey Gannon broke the meet record in the 300m hurdles at the Class A Meet and finished second in the 110m hurdles.
- Central's Gus Karweh clears a three-inch best of 6-10 in the high jump at the Class A Meet.
- North Kingstown teammates Thorin Cardente and Joseph Zingarelli both clear a meet record and state best of 13-6 in the pole vault at the Class A Meet.
- Smithfield's Kayla Ezeama leaped a state-leading 35-10.75 in the triple jump at the Class C Meet.
