Connolly Smashes CR At BAA Invitational Mile; Wellesley's Matejka Captures Boys' Title


The BAA Invitational Mile, held on Saturday during Boston Marathon weekend, produced a pair of exciting race in both the boys' and girls' scholastic event.

Natick's Grace Connolly, the recent MIAA Division 2 mile and two-mile champion, held off Newton's Clare Martin to win the girls' race with a course-record time of 5 minutes, 4.8 seconds. Martin, who did most of the front-running in the race, placed second at 5:07.1. She also dipped under the CR of 5:10.5 by Newton alum Melanie Fineman in 2010.


The boys' race turned into a much closer affair with Wellesley's Benjamin Matejka earning top honors with a time of 4:28.0. Mah, the pace-setter throughout the race, earned runner-up honors at 4:29.6.Newton's Gal Fudim was third in 4:37.6.

The respective races included two athletes from each of the cities and towns along the marathon course - Ashland, Newton, Wellesley, Hopkinton, Brookline, Ashland and Boston.
