Newton North, Newton South Take Division I Titles


As predicted, the Newton North boys and Newton South girls went home with the titles at the Division I Championships on Saturday.

Newton North cruised past runner-up Acton Boxborough, 71-47, to earn its crown. It was a closer affair in the girls where Newton South held off second-place Franklin, 78-65.

Newton North collected four wins in its victory. Andrew Mah claimed the two-mile title with a solid 9:20.05 clocking. He was also fourth in the mile. The Tigers' Theo Burba won an exciting race in the 600m , dipping under 1:20 for the first time of his young career with a winning 1:19.62, the second fastest time in the country behind fellow Bay Stater Rodney Agyare-May of Burncoat. Newton North also claimed the 4x400m relay (3:26.88) and got a 'W' from shot-putter Nathaniel Klein, who had a toss of 52 feet, 2.25 inches.

The 1,000m proved to be a thriller to the end with Lexington's Thomas Lingard edging Acton-Boxboriugh's Colin Grip with his time of 2:29.61. Grip finished at 2:29.78. Devin O'Connell of Andover was third with a fast 2:30.57.

Newton South's Lucy Jenks and teammate Clare Martin went 1-2 in the girls' 1,000m to collect 18 big points. Jenks finished at 2:57.73, a time that ranks No. 2 among all ninth-graders nationwide. Martin crossed the line in 2:58.35. Franklin's Nicole Clement was third at 2:58.61.

Samantha Frifborg of Acton Boxborough, who currently is tied for No. 9 in the nation in the 600, improved on her all-time best with a first-place time of 1:33.69.

Newton South claimed the 4x800m crown over top-seed Franklin with a time of 9:28.86.
