Division I Relays Belong To Newton North


It was a clean sweep for Newton North at the MSTCA Division I State Relays.

The Tigers left the Reggie Lewis Center on Sunday with both the boys' and girls' team titles. The boys coasted to a 62-28 win over second-place Acton-Boxborough Regional. In the girls' competition, Newton North defeated runner-up Wachusett Regional, 53-40.

On the boys' side, Newton North claimed four titles, winning the Sprint Medley (3:35.75), Distance Medley (10:35.78), 4x50-yard shuttle hurdle (27.46) and shot put (139-8) relays. In the shuttle hurdle, just .33 of a second separated the top six teams.

In a heated battle in the 4x400m, Acton-Boxborough prevented Newton North from winning a fifth relay by edging the Tigers with a time of 3:28.13. Newton North finished second at 3:28.66.

Highlighting the girls' relay events was Franklin, which raced to a nation No. 9 in the 4x800m with its time of 9:28.17.

Newton North captured three relay events, taking the high jump (15-3.5), long jump (49-2.25) and 4x50y hurdles (29.18).
