Travers, McDonald Dominate at Cumberlandfest 5K


Harry Travers was all alone at the finish of the annual Cumberlandfest 5K.

The soon-to-be senior from Cumberland High led from start to finish at Saturday's race and posted a minute victory over his closest pursuer, breaking the tape at Diamond Hill State Park in 18 minutes, 7 seconds, Placing second and third, respectively, were Cumberland teammates Mike Swerdlow (19:07) and Jacob Drezek (19:09). 

The women's division proved to be no contest, too. Former King Phillip runner Amanda McDonald posted a first-place time of 19:41.McDonald, who was fifth overall, was two minutes ahead of runner-up Julia Dempsey of Cumberland, who was 15th in 21:41. Exeter's Katie Millar was third and 17th overall at 22:26. The 20-year-old Millar is the daughter of former Cumberland standout Sue Ratcliffe.

Former Cumberland all-state shot-putter Kendra Plant was among the 80 finishers. Plant, who took up running just a year ago, was timed in an impressive 23:05 for the 3.1-mile race.
