K of C 4-Mile Relay coming soon

In last year's meet, Classical's Alva Hicks was second in the hammer.

There's a reason it's been around for 47 years and still going strong.

The popular Knights of Columbus 4-Mile Relay is just around the corner. This year's meet will be held on Saturday, April 4 at Mount Pleasant High's Conley Stadium. The relay event features three divisions for boys and two divisions for girls. In addition, the meet also hosts a pair of freshmen mile races and a hammer competition. The K of C meet is sanctioned for Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York athletes.

At last year's meet, Bishop Hendricken and Bishop Feehan posted the fastest times of the day in their respective relays with the Hawks timed in 18:22.87 for the boys and the Lady Shamrocks clocked in 21:30.14.

La Salle Academy, which recently won the boys' and girls' team titles for the four-mile relay at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships, is scheduled to send some of its talented runners to the meet. The K of C event has also had its share of gifted teams outside the border, such as Feehan, which ran the second fastest time in the meet's history last year.

The hammer throw competition also doesn't come up short on getting quality competitors, including Barrington teammates Adam Kelly and Bobby Colantonio and Moses Brown's Owen Russell, the 1-2-3 finishers in the weight throw at NBNI last week. Russell copped the boys' title in 2014 with a heave of 209 feet, 5 inches. Narragansett grad and multiple all-stater Leia Mistowski was first for girls at 167-10

T-shirts are awarded to the top five teams in each division in the relays and top 10 finishers in the hammer and ninth-grade races. Team plaques will also be given to the first-place teams.
