Diary of a wimpy kid: Steeplechase Edition

Steeplechase is hard, but hey someone's gotta do it!

A preview of me this weekend.

Most of you don't know my name, and sadly I know yours, but just as an intro, I am the new MileSplitMass intern, and I'm here to rock your world. Most of the time I merely do the live coverage of meets and load results, but this weekend, it's my time to shine. I will be competing in the race I have longed for for so long.

Now this is an exciting time for me. I have begged my coach for years to allow me to compete in the steeplechase, and today, he told me "be careful what you wish for" and finally granted my request. Some may think I might have been nervous, but after hearing my credentials, fret not fellow track enthusiasts. I am a strictly distance runner with absolutely zero hurdling experience. The closest I've ever come to steeplechasing is hopping fences into pools--not that I would partake in such lawless activites. I have the coordination of a child learning to walk for the first time, and probably the stride of one. The first time I jumped a hurdle was today, about 48 hours before my big appearance. Suffice to say I am almost overqualified for this race...

So I'm not just in this race for the fun of it; mostly I'm doing it for the fame and the glory. Come Saturday afternoon  I will be the steeplechase record-holder of my high school. Please, hold your applause. I'm sure some of you skeptics may be wondering if I am perhaps the first of my school to even attempt the steeplechase. And you're right, but that's completely irrelevant.

And as my usual duties as an intern are the live tweets you all so dearly love, don't worry, I'll still be live tweeting during my race. Make sure you follow @MileSplitMass on Twitter for all your live track coverage.

Steeplechase goes off at 4pm at Regis College! Check back here for a live photostream and twitter for live tweets!
