DUDLEY — Stella Worters and distance running initially seemed to have the feel of a short-term arrangement.

She participated in a cross-country program in sixth and eighth grades at Charlton Middle School, but hesitated to call herself a runner.

"I was one of those kids who jogged and then walked once I got to the woods," Worters said.

Then she found herself joining the cross-country team at Shepherd Hill as a favor to a friend and fellow freshman who wanted to have a familiar face to train with.

The friend lasted about a week before walking away. As for Worters, she kept on running.
