Boys Divison 5
After removing the Cape Ann League from the 5k database (it's slightly over 3 Miles but a solid course), the virtual meet slides newcomer Seekonk as the Top contender, followed by Norton High School. Cape Ann rivals Newburyport and Hamilton Wenham will make this a very close team battle. Both teams know each other very well, and look for this rivalry to be strong enough to make a difference. Look for a tough four way battle, with the defending Champions (Newburport) squeaking out a close one. Don't be surprised if Martha's Vineyard knocks off one of the four as they have two front runners for low scoring points in the top 10.
The Individual title should be one of the best races of the day, as Nick Carelo will clash with Matt Mahoney of Swampscott, and Mike Wyman of Old Rochester. At the early season Frank Kelley Invitational, Carleo defeated Mahoney by ten seconds with a Wrentham best time of 15:34. Both Wyman (15:16) and Mahoney (15:19) locked horns at the fast Twilight meet, and produced some fast results. It should be an interesting race,. but Carleo will not only defend his title, he will be ready to make a statement prior to the All State finals. Other runners to watch Sam Bradford (Bedford), Alex Lanzi (Seekonk), and Jeremy Alley-tarter (Martha's Vineyard).
Girls Divison 5
The competitiveness of the Dual County and Cape Ann Leagues prepare their teams so well for the month of November. This is the fourth consecutive year that Hamilton Wenham and Weston will compete for the Top two spots. As these two Hall of Fame coaches will once again have their teams ready for another classic match up. I am not sure if it's going to be as close as 2012, but I am leaning towards Weston High School to repeat. After these two teams, there could be as many as six more fighting for two spots. Bedford has a couple of single digit points in Dietz and Maclellan that may be to tough to overcome. The virtual meet has Bishop Stang, Norwell, Arlington Catholic, Triton, and Old Rochester grinding it out for that fourth spot. I think Triton may be as strong as any of that bunch, it will certainly be fun to watch.
The individual title will match up up defending Champion Erin Dietz from Bedford, and North Reading's Nicole Roberts. Roberts will not show up in the 5K rankings because she has not competed the full distance during the season. The North Reading standout was third a year ago, and is coming off a fine performance at her Conference meet. Look for a classic race between these two experienced harriers. Read Allen (Weston), Jackie Coscia (Scituate), Jillian Howard (Weston), and Liz Willmonton (Triton) will all be runners to watch.
