Scanlon, McMillan top athletes last week

While the schedule will soon be full with an abundance of league and invitational meets, the slate was fairly slim last week with just two events taking place that involved R.I. athletes – the inaugural Twilight X-C Relays and the Hartford Riverfront Festival.

MileSplit RI would like to recognize and congratulate two athletes that stood out this past weekend – East Greenwich senior Garrett Scanlon and Barrington sophomore Emma McMillan - as our M-F Athletic male and female Athlete of the Week.

Scanlon, a tenth-place finisher at last year’s state championship meet, led the Avengers to the team title of the Small School division at the Twilight X-C Relays last Friday. Running the leadoff leg of the 3x2 mile relay, Scanlon gave teammates Tom Sommer and Graham Chapski a convincing lead at the start with a sub 10:15 effort. As a team, EG finished with a time of 31 minutes, 40.2 seconds, the fastest of the night for the combined six-mile relay.

McMillan, the state titlist as a frosh last fall, is off to a good start this season. She finished second in the Hindley Division at the Injury Fund meet Sept. 2 and this past Saturday finished an outstanding third overall at the Hartford meet with a season best of 18:55.0 for the 5K course. McMillan’s strong finish sparked the Eagles to the team crown.
